Battling Depression

Depression is not just feeling sad, depressed, down, troubled, and lonely. It's a state of mind where you can't get out of these feelings. There's a difference between being sad and suffering from clinical depression.

We must recognize the symptoms of depression, and don't get treatment for it. At its worst, severe depression can end in suicide.

How to spot depression:

Here's a help to distinguish between clinical, "capital D" Depression and the common down days? Many people manage to keep up their daily routine, not really knowing what's wrong, or failing to admit they have depression.

1. Depressed mood/ Mood swings

2. Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you normally enjoy

3. Insomnia or hypersomnia (sleeping too little or too much)

4. Fatigue or loss of energy

5. Feelings of worthlessness

6. Feeling guilty for no specific reason

7. Lack of concentration; indecisiveness

8. Restless or slower than usual

9. Dramatic weight loss or gain

10. Change radically in appetite

11. Suicidal thoughts

Here are some tips to cope with depression:

• Be patient with antidepressants effectiveness. It takes time for antidepressants to work; they don't work immediately in fact it takes several weeks depending on the grade of your depression.

• Once you feel better, it's important to keep taking your antidepressant for as long as your doctor tells you to. Continued use can help prevent depression rebounds.

• If you want to stop taking your medication, do so only after discussing this with your doctor.

• Depression can lead to muscular tension, irritability, inability to concentrate, and headaches with/out an accelerated heart rate. So, it's important to engage in different exercises (mental and physical). Try to do physical exercise and aim to have a healthy lifestyle with nutritional eating habits.

• You can also experience fatigue as a symptom. The best way to combat fatigue, especially if your medication has it as side effect, is to consult your medical practitioner for alternative medicine and therapies for the relief depression medication side effects.
